Understanding Scenarios, Versions, and Segments

This guide explains the key components that make up your transaction evaluation rules.

A Scenario is a set of conditions that functions as a detection pattern for specific transaction activity. When a transaction matches the criteria in an enabled scenario, it triggers an alert.

Scenario Versions and Statuses

A single scenario can have multiple versions, allowing you to edit a new configuration without affecting the live detection pattern. To create a new version, use the "Create draft" action.

Each version has have one of the following statuses:

  • Draft: A user-editable version of the scenario. Only one draft can exist at a time.

  • Preparing data: The system is backfilling data so it can correctly execute the scenario.

  • Disabled: The data is ready, but the scenario version is not active.

  • Enabled: The scenario version is live and actively evaluating transactions. Only one version can be enabled at a time.

Segment Configurations

While the core detection pattern of a scenario remains the same between versions, the behavior of each version can be tailored using Segment Configurations. These allow the scenario to behave differently for various customer groups (e.g., high-risk persons vs. low-risk persons).

Key rules for segments:

  1. Segments are evaluated in order from top to bottom.

  2. The first segment that a transaction matches will trigger an alert. No further segments will be evaluated for that transaction.

  3. You can use the same segment multiple times with different conditions for greater flexibility.

For each segment, you can configure:

  • Parameters: The specific conditions for the scenario's logic (e.g., a transaction limit of $1,000).

  • Alert Level: A priority from 1 (highest) to 9 (lowest) that is used to organise cases for analysts.

  • Outcome: The action to be taken. Hold creates a case and recommends stopping the payment. Allow creates a case but recommends processing the payment.

How to Configure a Scenario

This process allows you to customize a scenario by applying different conditions and outcomes to specific customer groups.

  1. Navigate to the scenario you wish to edit and select Actions > Create draft.

  2. Once the new draft version is created, select Actions > Edit.

  3. Click Add customer segment and choose a segment.

  4. Configure its specific Parameters, Alert priority level, and Outcome.

  5. To add more segments, repeat the previous step.

  6. Use the drag handles on the left to reorder segments as needed.

  7. To remove a segment, click the delete icon (trash can) on its row.

  8. Click Save draft to apply your changes to the draft scenario.

  9. The draft scenario is now updated with your segment configuration.

  10. Click Actions > Promote draft to move it to the Preparing data status.

  11. Once the data is ready, the scenario status will move to Disabled

  12. To activate this version, click Actions > Enable
